Clan villages and Confucian academies · two nights
Andong and Hahoe 안동 · 하회 · The inland north-east
Hahoe is a clan village in a bend of the Nakdong River, still lived in by descendants of the Ryu family. Its thatched and tiled houses are UNESCO-listed, and several of them take guests.
Two nights here is the slow middle of a trip. You sleep on a yo mattress on an ondol floor, warmed from below, and wake to a courtyard and a river.

The Nakdong loops almost all the way round the village. Walk the sandbank and the pine grove along it in the early morning, when mist sits on the water.
The Hahoe mask dance is performed on some days. The masks were carved from alder; a carver shows how.
