Boseong and the south coast 보성 · 남해안 · The south coast

The south coast is where Korea slows down. Boseong’s tea plantations run in curved rows down the hillsides, and the first leaves are picked in late April and May.

From there it is a short drive to the reed beds of Suncheon Bay, the walled folk town at Naganeupseong, and a coast of a few thousand islands. We take three or four nights and a car with a driver.

The first picking

Ask about it

Boseong’s tea is picked by hand on terraced slopes. Walk the rows in the morning mist, then drink the year’s first tea in a farm tea room.

A blue wooden jetty on still water — Suncheon Bay National Garden

A national garden on the edge of town, and beyond it the reed beds, which turn gold in October and November. A boardwalk crosses them to a hill where you watch the tide come in at sunset.

A bridge over the water on the Yeosu coast — Yeosu

Yeosu and Tongyeong sit on a coast of islands, many reached by short ferries. Oysters come from these waters in winter.
