Jeju is a volcanic island off the south coast, with Hallasan in the middle and black rock all round the edge. Inland there are low craters called oreum, stone walls and tangerine farms.
Skip the theme parks. We base you on the quieter east side, walk a section of the Olle trail with a guide, and arrange time with the haenyeo, the women divers, at a village diving school.

The haenyeo are on UNESCO’s intangible heritage list. Some villages run sessions where a diver explains the work and the sea.

Hallasan is South Korea’s highest peak. The summit trails need a reservation and start early.
